Genre reserach - mise-en-scene

Genre research - mise-en-scene
In the planning process we considered all the aspects of mise-en-scene which are setting, make up, props, lighting and costume. We researched these aspects and decided as a group how we would represent them in our film so that it fits with the horror genre.

Setting
The setting in horror films are usually similar and they are set in places where the audience can relate to as it makes them more unsettling. Typical settings of a horror film are: small towns, haunted houses, woods and hospitals. We are choosing to set part of our film in a woods and an alleyway as this is stereotypical to the horror genre. However we are also going to be original and set part of it in an ordinary house and at our main characters work as we want to show that the killer is seen as normal and not suspected of killing during the film.

Make up
This aspect of mise-en-scene is used in horror films to make the characters look more realistic and to represent their personality. For example make up is used in horror films to make gruesome scenes look more realistic as the use of fake blood can show injuries.

In our film our main character is a murdering clown who is also a clown children's entertainer in the day. So we decided to use make up to have him appearing as though he is a typical happy friendly clown in his day job but when he murders we will make his make up messier like the joker in batman. This is effective as the audience will be on edge when his make up is messy as they know what is going to happen.

Props
Props are commonly used in horror films as the murder weapon, Some props used often include: knifes, guns, shovel. These can be found after a murder sometimes as clues to who the killer is. Sometimes the killer can also leave props behind to send a message. One of the props we are going to use in our film is the clowns entertaining equipment when he is being as children entertainer.

Lighting
There are many lighting effects that can be used within a horror film. The lighting is typically dark and dull , this is to create mystery and make the film more scary and tense. This is because the audience cannot see everything what is happening and they know that when the scene turns dim something is doing to happen. We decided to follow this stereotypical lighting as we think that this will make our film look more creepy and will help us reach our aim of scaring people. Other lighting effects we plan on using is a torch light when we are filming in the alley and woods, we will use this to highlight key characters and action in the films.

Costume
Costumes are commonly used in horror films and they can be used to represent a characters personality. For example masks are used in horror films to hide a persons identity, this can make a character seem mysterious and keep the audience interested. This is mostly used to hide a killers identity. We have chosen to have our main character wear a stereo typical clown outfit during his day job but when he is killing people we are going to make his costume look more scruffy and ripped. This will be effective as when the audience see that he is in his killing clothes they will be on edge expecting something to happen.
