In the horror genre there are iconic themes which are used so that the audience can easily recognise that a film is categorised in the horror genre. These themes are similar to each other and this will increase the audience's fear as they will be anticipating what is about to happen. Although if a plot is original then audience won't be expecting anything, this will be very effective as they will be scared throughout the film because they won't have an incline when something scary is going to happen. Common themes used may be based around everyday situations which makes the film seem more realistic. This means the audience may link them to their everyday lives which will cause the film to scare them as they could imagine the storyline happening to them.
