Own Title Sequence plan

Title Sequence for our film.

The main idea for our title sequence is to show a group of teenagers getting chased by our main villain who is dressed as a clown. As the main action of the chase is happening we will include short second clips of random conventional horror features which will make the audience feel uncomfortable. As this is happening actors, directors, editors names will appear on screen in red writing, which has connotations of blood and danger. When the main drama is about to happen at the end of the chase it will suddenly cut to the main title of our film which is "The Entertainer".

Using the distribution company of 'Dimension Extreme' we will first include that in the beginning of our title sequence, on a black background with white bold writing. We chose to use a black background as it is conventional to the horror genre and has connotations of death. We chose the white bold writing to contrast with black to highlight the importance of the distribution company.

Sound Effects
While the distribution company appears the sound effects of children giggling, chimes and a creepy music box begins. We found a similar link to this music on youtube.

We are using something similar to these two clips throughout the title sequence as we think it is relevant with the children laughing as it links with our storyline. Also the chimes can be seen as symbolic as it is a warning of danger to the children and can be portrayed as mysterious.  As the clips are been shown the sound effect of a static television cutting off to make is seem uncomfortable.

Lighting

The lighting we have decided to use is dark lighting with minimal lighting to highlight certain areas of the screen to reveal shadows, props, characters etc. The minimal lighting will be from the torch held by the teenagers in the woods as it flashes back to the clown character. The clips included, some will include over exposed lighting and some with shadowing, this change in lighting will make it look unnatural.

Editing

The editing we will is a montage sequence of clips, for example on The Ring Videotape, but at a quicker scene and use unnatural strange clips. Cuts will be used to quicken up the speed to make it seem more thrilling and dangerous

Research: Typical Story lines and Characters

With the genre of horror films they have very typical storyline's and characters.
Typical storyline's: Serial Killer, Psychopaths, Gore, Ghosts, Paranormal, Exorcism, Religion beliefs.

Typical Characters:

In most Horror films they tend to use typical characters such as blonde girls who tend to die first. They are mostly unintelligent and annoying. They tend to use typical blonde skinny girls in horrors to make them look vulnerable which makes the killer etc look more powerful.

Individual research into title sequences

Individual research into title sequences

Title sequences are essential as they can introduce a film or shows: story line, genre and main characters. They are around a minute long and they usually include sound, for example in television shows they usually have a theme tune. They are the first thing that the audience see's so they need to well thought out and keep the audience interested so they will keep watching.

Conventional features of a horror title sequence:
-Dull/Dark colours.
- The colour red.
- Dark lighting.
- Creepy music (High pitched) / music that builds tension.

We are thinking of using a dark background for our title sequence and it is going to include random clips of things associated with horror but they will also link with our storyline. The transitions between the clips won't be smooth and will be jumpy which means it is non continuity editing and this will make our title sequence look conventional to the horror genre. The sound effects we are thinking of using while our title sequence is running is high pitched childish giggles. We think this will make our title sequence seem scary and uncomfortable and the sound effect relates to our film as it features children.

Research into possible distributor of our film

Research into possible distributor of our film

Two film distributors we could use are Tempe Entertainment and Darclight. These two distributors specialize in the horror genre which is the category that our film falls into. This means both companies would be suitable to distribute our film and they will do this successfully as they have had experience distributing horror films.

Tempe entertainment

Tempe entertainment first started as a mail-order distributor in 1991. They specialise at the moment in low-budge horror however they are trying to branch out. This is one reason why I think it would be suitable to use this independent distributor as our film fits into their specialised category so they will be likely to agree to distribute our film. They've  released films such as 'Blood Letting', 'Teenage Goes to Camp' and 'The Bonesetter'. This proves that they have had experience with the horror genre before which suggests that they would be able to distribute our film successfully.

Darclight

Darclight is a division of Arclight and they're devoted to showcasing the best in the horror, thriller and action genres from around the world. Formed in 2004, the Darclight banner encompasses a wide variety of genres including horror, thriller and action feature films, with recent successes being the horror films 'Wolf Creek', 'Perfect Creature' and 'Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror'. This is the first reason why I think that Darclight would be a suitable distributor as they have a lot of experience with distributing horror films. However they usually deal with bigger budget films that have run or will run the festival circuit. This means that they may not be interested in distributing our film due producing it on a low-budget.

Other possible distributors we could use can be found at: https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=124419934617272473#editor/target=post;postID=224322435256576083

Individual Analysis of a Similar Film.

My Bloody Valentine (18)

The title sequence to My Bloody Valentine first starts with a loud screeching noise to get immediate attention from the audience. The sounds effects use in the first few minutes for the title sequence is a build up of violins which sounds like it is in an orchestra which makes it sound more intense and builds adrenaline. There is also a voice over of reports of this specific murder case of 'Harry Warden' this shows the content of the film straight away. In the title sequence there is the mixture of cinematography and editing which makes it extremely effective. The cinematography tends to reverse zoom out of certain images on the newspaper articles. This involves continuity editing as it goes onto the next newspaper, also the editing makes the titles and some images look 3D which keeps the cinematography interesting as it look as though it is going through the images.

The first scene after the title sequence is an establishing shot of a Hospital which sets the scene, and introduces mise-en-scene. Cross cutting editing is used to show a flash back, as there is a medium long shot of a man in a hospital bed then suddenly goes onto a group of men working down a mine/pit. A close up of his eye closed then suggests he is having a flashback. The sound effects used in the location of the mine/pit is synchronous sound as there is the sound of clanging etc. The sound effects become more tense when he puts his gas mask on due to an explosion in the mine. Lighting used is very dark until the bright explosion happens, in which the cross cutting editing flicks back on to the close up of the man eye open. The lighting becomes lighter as it is medium long shot of a nurse walking through the hospital to her patience, where then she notices her patient is missing which we guess was the man in the scene before now he is awake. After the moment of realization the lighting gets darker and the sound effects begin to create tension which suggests something is going to happen. The violins get louder as the man in the background stands up from the bed. The camera pans towards the man so he is in the main shot. Then the title appears with the sound effect of screaming women. The titles are in red to relate to the content and has the connotations of murder and danger.

The same establishing shot is then used of the hospital with police cars pulling up outside, with diegetic and synchronous sound of sirens. There are then several long shots of the main police officer walking round the hospital with bludgeoned bodies laying on the floor. The sound and music used is more serious with a mixture of violins and drums. The cinematography used is just a panning shot of the officer observing, then an edit of fading out to go to the next scene. A deep focus is used to emphasis the blood dripping from this hand with the officer in the background.

After the scene in the hospital when they discover it is the man in the first scene, it cuts onto the mining tunnel with music playing and teenagers hanging out and drinking. The cinematography uses a steadicam shot to follow the main teenage boy coming from the tunnel over to a car with a girl sat on it. The mise-en-scene completely changes within these few shots, as the costumes and props in the hospital were police uniform and hospital equipment etc. Where as this scene contrasts as the teenagers are wearing casual clothing with beer in their hands. The sound used is diegetic sound such as laughing etc there is no sound effects or music yet. The lighting is very dark as it is set in the nighttime. Another car pulls up in which uses diegetic sound again and then there is a high angle shot of the whole group of teens near the mining tunnel, this resets the scene. There is then a shot reverse shot between two couples of teenagers who are having conversations and taking pictures. There is also a shot reverse shot of the two couples.

Certificate Of Film Research

Certificate Of Film Research

Introduction
Before the production of our film was able to take place we had decide on a suitable age rating for the idea which we had. Through research into what defines the different age ratings we found that the most suitable age rating for our project was a 15 as its content fell under all the appropriate categories of a 15 rated film. For example our film idea contains the following:
  • Strong violence to some extent
  • Mild use of strong language
  • Scenes containing blood
  • Harmful props such as a knife
  • Scenes not suitable for viewers under the age of 15
Although our project contains these features, there are aspects of the 15 age certificate that our film does not contain, such as:
  • Portrayal of sexual activity
  • Strong verbal references to sex
  • Sexual nudity
  • Brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
  • Drug taking
Also, due to our age rating some uncomfortable scenes, such as the violent ones, will not dwell on the injury or pain and easy accessible weapons will not be glamourised.

Horror Genre Title Sequence Analysis

Horror Genre Title Sequence Analysis

Introduction
Throughout my research I was asked to consider title sequences and how they are effectively designed and used within our specific film genre. The title sequence I have chosen to analyse is 'The Conjuring', as it falls under the same genre as our soon to be created product. Title Sequence: http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/the-conjuring/

Aesthetics
This specific title sequence is set up to present the credits for the production team as well as introduce the history of the storyline, this is cleverly done through the use of cut out old news articles and photos of what seems to be previous owners of the house. There is also no use of vibrant colours, only black and white are used and this effectively ties in with the newspaper effect that is presented as well as containing some of the conventional aspects of the horror genre. The title sequence also shows a lot of what seems to be the main setting to the film, the house with the large tree in the background. The use of the noose hanging from the tree also suggests that the house within the film has some history and this could potentially link in with the storyline. Certain images within the title sequence also clearly identifies the films genre.

Progression
The progression from shot to shot throughout this opening scene is done effectively as it gives the audience just enough insight into the history of the house and its previous owners. The shots are shown in a fairly quick succession which could also relate to the pace in which the film is set.
Font
A consistent font is used throughout the opening title sequence as the font used allows points of interest to be clearly revealed on top of the newspaper article theme. It also helps to introduce the little of the film allowing it to clearly stand out as a white font upon a black background.

Sound
A number of sounds are used to create an eerie and creepy soundtrack to the opening title sequence. This is a clear indication of the representation of the films genre. The volume also begins to grow as the title sequence progresses which could also help to set the tone and pace of the scenes that follow.

Opening Sequence of Film Analysis

Opening Sequence of Film Analysis

Introduction
The opening sequence within a film is often cleverly produced in order to set the tone and pace for the rest of the film whilst also leaving the audience to want to continue to watch the production. This creation of the product being watchable is made up of many media features that help to contribute to a films success. These include: mise en scene, editing, sound and cinematography. Throughout our research we were asked to analysis the first fifteen minutes of a production that shared the same genre as our selected storyline, in doing so I have chosen to analyse 'Halloween (1978).

Mise En Scene
The setting of this particular opening scene is very iconic of the horror genre as secluded lonely houses are often used throughout the horror genre as settings in which horrific actions occur. The props used are very minimal but are all very effective in terms of the storyline and the involvement of the audience, for example the withdrawal of the knife from the draw allows the audience to question what purpose this knife will serve. The lighting throughout this whole opening scene is also very conventional of the horror genre as you tend to see the lighting within horror genre settings to be dark and creepy, this is done to create shadows and tension within the scene. The lighting also allows the tension to be decreased towards the end of the scene after the murder has taken place and the new scene begins with a much brighter lighting, this is used often within the horror genre. The characters within this opening scene are also very conventional as we see a teenage boy and girl home alone in the secluded house and as the boy leaves the girl is left helpless and is therefor able to be murdered. The clown mask and costume are also very iconic within the horror genre.
Editing
This opening scene is edited continuously to set the pace of the scene and add to the effect that the other media features bring to the scene. No cuts are used within the opening scene of this film which helps to build the tension for this particular part of the film. A long take is also used to show the characters actions, which also helps to suggest to the audience what is about to happen.

Sound
During the opening of the title sequence the sound clearly identifies that the film the audience is about to watch is from the horror genre and has been produced to attempt to frighten them, this is done through the use of, the now iconic, harsh and sharp piano tones played in a crescendo (used for both the soundtrack and at times a sound motif). Minimal dialogue is also heard throughout the opening of this sequence that is all relevant to the storyline. Sound motifs are regularly used during points of interest, such as the switching off of the light on the upstairs bedroom, this also helps to scare the audience as the sharp piano note is capable of making the now tense audience to jump. The use of both diagetic sound (walking down the stairs) and non-diagetic sound (piano) are both used effectively to heighten the suspense of the scene.

Cinematography

After the title sequences the opening scene begins with an establishing shot of a secluded house that has minimal light coming from it and has an eerie feel about it, this is conventional of a horror genre film as it is regularly used to cause tension and mystery. All of the opening sequence is also shot from a first person perspective and looks to be shot using the handheld cam technique, this is effective as it allows the audience to see what this character is seeing and allows them to question what is about to happen. A camera lens is also used within the murder scene to give the impression that the mask that the character has retrieved has been put on, this helps to add to the idea of the first person perspective.

Genre - research iconography

Iconography

In the horror genre there are iconic themes which are used so that the audience can easily recognise that a film is categorised in the horror genre. These themes are similar to each other and this will increase the audience's fear as they will be anticipating what is about to happen. Although if a plot is original then audience won't be expecting anything, this will be very effective as they will be scared throughout the film because they won't have an incline when something scary is going to happen. Common themes used may be based around everyday situations which makes the film seem more realistic. This means the audience may link them to their everyday lives which will cause the film to scare them as they could imagine the storyline happening to them.

Iconic themes that are commonly used within the horror genre:

- Supernatural
- Depression
- Possession
- Religion
- Insanity
- Revenge
- Juxtaposition of good versus Evil
- Suicide
- Nightmares
- Obsession
- Possessions
- Childhood issues
- Symbols of death

Iconic settings used within the horror genre:

- Haunted house
- Woods
- Abandoned buildings
- Cellars

Iconic props used within the horror genre:

- Knifes
- Guns
- Household objects used as weapons

Title Sequences

Title Sequences

Introduction
Title sequences are an important feature within the production of a film as they can be used to do many things such as: identify the genre of the film; reveal the production company of the film; narrate the beginning of a storyline and reveal character information. Title sequences can be specifically designed to give the product a certain feel about it, this can also be done to help identify the specific genre of the product.

Within the horror genre you would find conventional features within title sequences such as:
  • Creepy looking typography
  • Shadows
  • Text revealed from within smoke
  • Dark lighting
  • The colours red and black
  • Sound motifs

 Conclusion
These are all conventional features of title sequences used within the horror genre and they help to clearly identify the genre.

genre research- iconography

Iconography
In horror films there are lots of different themes within the films that creates iconic fears to the audience by indicating fear and shock. Themes create fear to the audience by showing the aspect of what the theme is which makes the audience respond more to the situations as they know what may or may not happen.
Such themes include;

Good versus Evil
Depression
Religion
Being possessed
Childhood issues
Revenge
Supernatural
Insanity
Madness
Suicide
Nightmares
Rape
Bipolar disorders
Schizophrenia
Obsessions
Protection

genre research- mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene
 Setting
we have chosen the typical horror film setting such as the 'scary' 'dark' woods setting and also a dark alleyway. These are very stereotypical towards horror films, in most horrors these settings occur. But just as normal mysterious horrors, we are using the ordinary house, neighbourhood and working person to make the killer seem to others as a normal working citizen.

Make up
we have chosen to use this to help our characters look more realistic, such as cuts and bruises on their bodies, and also being used to show the characters personality. In our film we are using a clown therefore we would need to get the clown to actually look like a clown but as in the muderous clown scenes we are wanting him to look dirty, scary and more 'murderous' so we would use make up to do this.

Props
The props  used in horror films are usually weapons, things that can be used as weapons, such as knifes, guns, sharp objects etc... These are usually found in crime scenes, on the killer or near the victim. In our film we are using the clown equipment in which a normal entertainment clown would use.

Lighting
The usual lighting effect in horrors are dull and dark, darkness shows fear which shows bad things are going to happen. We have decided to keep this lighting in our film to create more fear, creepiness and mystery in what could happen.

Costume
Costumes used in horror films are usually to bring out the characters personality. As we are using a clown costume we are indicating that the character is full of tricks, is mysterious and doesn't show their true identity such as the clown is shown to others as good but really he is a murderous scary figure.

Possible Distributor of Our Film

Darclight

Darclight is a division of Arclight and they're devoted to showcasing the best in the horror, thriller and action genres from around the world. Formed in 2004, the Darclight banner encompasses a wide variety of genres including horror, thriller and action feature films, with recent successes being the horror films "Wolf Creek", "Perfect Creature" and "Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror". They tend to deal with bigger budget films that have run or will run the festival circuit.

I thought this could be a possible distributor as they base their films around the horror genre which is ideal as we are basing our film round gore and horror. The only problem is that it deals with bigger budgets even though it is a independent distributor.

Dimension Extreme

From their website: "DIMENSION EXTREME is home to the most intense, edgy and provocative programming that will continually push the envelope. Horror films, thrillers, sci-fi adventures, and bawdy, outrageous comedies are a few of the genres that will drive DIMENSION EXTREME." The are, of course, owned by The Weinstein Company and generally just pick up festival movies or big foreign films for North American release, so... I wouldn't go soliciting them, but they're worth mentioning because they come out with a lot of good films and they've really pushed the genre forward. Recently, they've released such titles as "Inside", "Diary of the Dead" and "Teeth".

I chose this independent distributor as i've seen a few of the films made by them such as 'teeth' which is disturbing which i thought could give our film abit of edge. As the distributor uses strange story lines and themes i thought we could mix it with horror and gore and make a unique film.

Research into Title Sequences

Title Sequences
Looking at both independent institutions and title sequences which could link with our film idea. I found this 'Bloody Mary' horror film sequence which was appropriate for both, there are many techniques which we could use similarly in our film. For example the lighting and the uncomfortable editing which makes it more thrilling for a title sequence. This is made by an independent institution as well which shows it is possible with a low budget to be able to achieve a successful title sequence.

The sound and lighting used is something i think we could use as we wanted the sound to be quite an uncomfortable sound to listen to and the lighting we wanted to be like a spotlight. we also wanted to include random clips of things to make it look very strange and weird which could link with the story line, this title sequence shows this and is a good example for what we wanted to do.

Possible Distribution Company

Introduction:
Through my research into a possible film distribution for our project I found a variety of suitable companies that would be ideal for the type of film we wish to produce and the limitations in which a low budget could bring. 'Brain Damage films' and 'Bloody Earth Films' were just a few of the considered distribution companies. I felt that these were suitable film distribution companies as their main focus of distribution is low budget horror productions, which is exactly what our project will be. These distribution companies could also be very beneficial as although they distribute independent films they are able to distribute products to a much larger audience, both local and not.

Brain Damage Films:
This company was established in 2001 and has been one of the most successful independent horror film distributors since it was established. They are able to produce both DVD's and videos on demand, which would be highly beneficial for our project. Website: http://braindamagefilms.com/about/

Bloody Earth Films:
This distribution is one of three of the daughter companies to 'Camp Motion Pictures'. Of the three, this is the distribution company that focuses primarily on the horror genre, specifically independent productions. The backing of this distribution company would also be very beneficial for such a small budget project such as ours. Website: http://www.alternativecinema.com/?pg=il&rpp=25&site=9

Horror Genre research

Genre; Horror film
The aim of a horror film is to create a sense of fear, panic, alarm, and dread for the audience. They are usually extremely unsettling and rely on scaring the audience by displaying their deepest fears and nightmares.
Many horror films portray old mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, werewolf, zombies, wizards and witches. In tradition to horror films they most likely contain a huge amount of violence, gore, darkness and blood into the main plot. They can also overlap into thrillers, fantasy and science fiction genres.
